Most people leave their Profhilo appointment feeling fine. The treatment itself is quick and well tolerated. The injection points are small. There is no dramatic immediate change to look at and no obvious sign that something significant has just happened in the skin.
That sense of normality is actually reassuring. But it can also create the impression that aftercare does not really matter. If you feel fine and look almost unchanged, how much can your post-treatment behaviour really affect the result?
More than most people realise. Profhilo works through a biological process that unfolds over weeks in the tissue. The conditions you create in the skin during that process either support it or work against it. Understanding what those conditions are and how to manage them is the difference between a result that delivers everything the treatment is capable of and one that falls slightly short.
What Is Happening in Your Skin After Profhilo
Before covering what to do and avoid, it helps to understand what the treatment is actually doing in the days and weeks after the appointment, because the aftercare guidance makes more sense when you know the biology behind it.
Profhilo uses a high concentration of non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid injected at specific points across the treatment area. Because the HA in Profhilo is not cross-linked into a gel that holds its shape, it spreads through the surrounding tissue after injection rather than staying in one place. As it spreads, it creates deep hydration in the tissue and stimulates fibroblast activity, which drives the production of new collagen and elastin.
This stimulation process is gradual and cumulative. The first session starts it. The second session, performed around four weeks later, reinforces it. The most visible results appear at around eight weeks after the first session as the collagen production accumulates enough to produce a noticeable improvement in skin quality, firmness, and glow.
During this entire window, particularly in the first 24 to 48 hours when the product is actively spreading and settling, the choices you make affect how well the biological process proceeds. Some things accelerate the product's metabolism before it can complete its work. Others introduce variables that interfere with the immune response the treatment depends on. Understanding which things matter and why changes how seriously you take the aftercare period.
The First 24 Hours: The Most Important Window
The 24 hours immediately after Profhilo treatment are when the product is most vulnerable to external influence. The HA is spreading through the tissue from the injection points and the initial inflammatory response that begins the collagen stimulation process is being established.
During this window, avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treatment area. This is the instruction most patients find hardest to follow because the small lumps that appear at injection points feel unusual and the instinct is to press them down. Do not. The lumps are temporary deposits of the high-concentration HA settling into the tissue. They distribute naturally within a few hours to a couple of days and do not need any manual assistance. Pressing on them risks displacing the product away from where it needs to go.
Avoid lying flat for at least four hours after treatment. The same principle applies here as with other injectables. Remaining upright in the immediate post-treatment period allows the product to settle into the tissue under normal gravitational conditions rather than redistributing as you rest. This is a small adjustment that most patients can easily accommodate.
Avoid intense physical exercise on the day of treatment. Elevated heart rate and increased circulation throughout the body in the first hours after Profhilo is injected can affect how the product distributes and can increase the likelihood of bruising and swelling at injection sites. A normal level of daily activity is fine. A gym session, run, or fitness class on the afternoon of your appointment is not.
Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment and ideally for 24 hours after. Alcohol is a vasodilator that increases blood flow and can contribute to bruising. It also dehydrates the tissue, which works directly against the deep hydration process that Profhilo is initiating.
Avoid applying makeup or any topical products to the treated area on the day of treatment. The injection points, though very small, represent minor punctures in the skin surface. Applying products to these sites while they are still fresh introduces a small but unnecessary infection risk. From the following day, normal skincare and makeup application can resume in most cases.
Days 2 to 7: Letting the Settling Process Continue
By day two most patients notice the small lumps from injection points have resolved or significantly reduced. Any redness at the injection sites has usually settled. If bruising appeared at any point it may still be visible through the first week but is typically minor and covers easily with makeup from day two onward.
During this first week, continue avoiding heat in sustained forms. Saunas, steam rooms, very hot baths, and hot yoga all raise tissue temperature significantly. Elevated skin temperature increases the rate at which the body metabolises hyaluronic acid, which works against the sustained presence of the Profhilo in the tissue during the period when it is producing its biological effect. The natural body temperature in daily life is not a concern. Deliberately raising skin temperature through heat exposure unnecessarily accelerates the process.
Continue protecting the skin from UV exposure during this window. Sun damage accelerates the breakdown of hyaluronic acid in the tissue and stimulates the very pigmentation and collagen degradation processes that Profhilo is working to address. Wearing a broad spectrum SPF of at least 30 applied every morning is a minimum during this period, and the habit of applying it consistently is worth carrying into every day of your treatment programme and beyond.
Avoid aesthetic facial treatments in the first two weeks after Profhilo. Facials involving massage or pressure, microneedling, laser, chemical peels, or any other active skin treatment should wait until the Profhilo has had adequate time to settle and the tissue is not in an active treatment response. Combining treatments too closely together creates an unpredictable biological environment and reduces the clarity of what each treatment is contributing.
Be gentle with your skincare routine during the first week. Active skincare ingredients including high-concentration retinoids, acids, and exfoliants can be irritating to skin that is in a treatment response phase. If your routine includes strong actives, consider taking a brief break from the most potent elements during the first week and reintroducing them gradually from day seven onward.
What Is Normal to Experience After Profhilo
Knowing what to expect prevents unnecessary concern and helps you distinguish between normal post-treatment responses and anything that warrants contacting your practitioner.
Small lumps at injection points are normal and expected. They are a visible feature of high-concentration non-cross-linked HA settling into the tissue. They are not a complication. They resolve naturally within 24 to 72 hours in most patients without any intervention.
Mild redness at injection points is normal on the day of treatment and typically settles within a few hours to a day. Some patients have more reactive skin and may notice redness persisting into day two, which is still within normal range.
Minor bruising is possible at any injection site, particularly in patients who bruise more easily due to individual vasculature characteristics, medications, or supplements. Arnica gel applied from the following day can help bruising resolve more quickly. Most bruising after Profhilo is minor and settles within five to seven days.
Mild tenderness when pressing on the treatment area in the first few days is normal as the tissue responds to the injections.
A tight or slightly full sensation in the treatment area can occur in the first few days as the high-concentration HA draws water into the local tissue. This is not uncomfortable for most patients and settles as the product distributes evenly.
The absence of dramatic immediate change is also completely normal. Profhilo does not produce an immediate visible transformation the way filler does. The improvement builds over weeks as the collagen and elastin production it stimulates accumulates. Not seeing a dramatic difference on day three is not an indication that the treatment has not worked. It means the treatment is working exactly as designed.
Between Session One and Session Two: The Four-Week Window
The gap between your first and second Profhilo session is not a passive waiting period. It is the window during which the initial biological response is developing and the conditions you maintain during this time support or undermine what the first session started.
Consistent SPF use throughout this period is non-negotiable for anyone serious about getting the best result from their treatment. UV exposure does not need to be significant to stimulate melanin production in skin that is regenerating. The daily application of SPF 30 or 50 before going outdoors, on cloudy days as well as sunny ones, is the aftercare step that the largest number of patients underestimate.
Stay well hydrated throughout this period. Hyaluronic acid works most effectively in a well-hydrated body. Drinking adequate water daily is not a dramatic clinical intervention but it supports the tissue environment in which the treatment is producing its result.
Maintain a skincare routine that is supportive rather than aggressive during this window. If you use retinoids, using them consistently at an appropriate strength supports the cellular renewal process and complements what Profhilo is doing. If your retinoid is causing irritation, reducing frequency rather than stopping entirely is usually the better approach.
Avoid anything that deliberately dehydrates or stresses the skin during this period. Excessive alcohol consumption, very poor sleep, significant physical illness, and sustained physiological stress all affect the tissue environment in which Profhilo is working. None of these are absolute contraindications for life, but being mindful of them during a treatment programme is sensible.
After Session Two: Supporting the Result as It Develops
The most visible result of a Profhilo course develops in the eight to twelve weeks following the first session. After your second session the same immediate aftercare guidelines apply as after the first.
As the result develops and you begin to see the improvement in skin quality, firmness, and radiance that the treatment produces, the question that follows is how to sustain it for as long as possible.
Sun protection is the single most impactful daily habit for sustaining a Profhilo result. UV breaks down the newly stimulated collagen and elastin and accelerates the degradation of the HA itself. Patients who maintain consistent daily SPF application consistently report their results lasting longer than those who apply it only when it is obviously sunny.
A skincare routine that includes a retinoid, a vitamin C serum, and a hydrating moisturiser supports the skin environment and complements the collagen and hydration improvement that Profhilo has produced. These are not a substitute for the treatment but they extend and reinforce its effects in the period between sessions.
Planning your maintenance session is worth thinking about at around four to five months after your first session. Most practitioners recommend a single maintenance session every six months for patients who have completed an initial course and are happy with their result. The maintenance session reinforces the bio-remodelling stimulus and sustains the tissue quality improvement at a level that allows it to compound over time rather than returning to baseline between courses.
When to Contact Your Practitioner
Almost everything that occurs in the first two weeks after Profhilo is within the normal range and resolves without intervention. But there are signs worth contacting your practitioner about promptly.
Contact your practitioner if you develop increasing rather than decreasing redness or swelling after day two, particularly if it is accompanied by warmth and tenderness. These signs could indicate an infection and early assessment is important.
Contact your practitioner if you develop any skin changes that feel like an allergic reaction, including widespread redness, significant swelling beyond the treatment area, or hives.
Contact your practitioner if any lumps at injection points have not resolved by seven to ten days. In most cases they will have settled well before this point, but persistent nodules are worth discussing.
Contact your practitioner if anything does not feel right or matches your expectation of what a normal post-treatment response looks like. A good practitioner would rather hear from a patient who turns out to be experiencing something completely normal than miss a patient who needed early attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear makeup the day after Profhilo?
Yes. Most patients return to normal makeup application from day two onward without any issue. On the day of treatment itself, avoid applying anything directly to the injection sites while they are still fresh.
When can I have a facial after Profhilo?
Wait at least two weeks before any facial treatment involving massage, active ingredients, or manual pressure over the treated area. This allows the Profhilo to fully settle and the initial tissue response to complete before any new stimulus is introduced.
Can I go swimming after Profhilo?
Avoid swimming for at least 24 hours after treatment, particularly in pools where chlorinated water could irritate fresh injection sites. Open water swimming carries a minor infection risk through the same sites while they are still healing. From day two most patients can resume normal swimming without concern.
Does Profhilo aftercare differ from skin booster aftercare?
The principles are largely the same. The main difference worth noting is that Profhilo's non-cross-linked high-concentration formula produces larger temporary lumps at injection points than most skin booster products do, which can be more alarming if you are not prepared for it. The resolution is the same. Leave them alone, and they settle naturally within a couple of days.
Will my result be worse if I do not follow the aftercare advice?
Not following aftercare guidelines does not guarantee a poor result, particularly for advice related to the period beyond the first 24 hours. But the guidelines exist because each one addresses a specific variable that affects how well the treatment works. Consistently ignoring all of them creates an environment that is less supportive of the biological process the treatment depends on. The more closely aftercare is followed, particularly in the first 48 hours, the more consistently the treatment delivers its full potential.
I have a social event two days after my Profhilo appointment. Is that a problem?
Two days is generally enough time for injection point redness to settle and for most minor bruising to be covered with makeup. The lumps at injection points typically resolve within 24 to 72 hours. Most patients are comfortable in social situations from day two onward. If you bruise easily, allowing a few more days as a buffer is a sensible precaution.
